Tips with your temps: Make sure your interproximal contacts are kept broad & tight when fabricating your own temps; This way your crowns won’t come back with open contacts (in the mouth, but not on the model).

Bridgework tips: Always use metal trays (no plastic trays) and always pickup your metal try-ins with a full arch impression when sending your cases back for porcelain application.

Patient consent tips with dentures: Many Drs are using a ‘Release for Completion of Dentures’ form where the patients signs off on agreeing to the size, shape , color, and arrangement of the teeth prior to processing. Allowing perhaps a few more minutes for the denture wax try-in to finalize the esthetics & phonetics can save extra visits & re-processing from the laboratory.

Thinking out of the box for 2008: For those of you looking to make 2008 the year you decide to bring your practice to a new level:

1. Using your digital camera, offer all Mom’s with children a free 8x10 color print next time they come in for their child’s 1st (or 2nd!) dental visit. You can print out the photo’s over the internet (through WalGreens for example) for almost nothing - and even spring for an inexpensive frame!
2. Look to alternate sources for target mailing lists, such as American Express (any ‘Black card' members in your area?!) or higher end publications that will sell you their mailing lists.
3. Offer FREE (single) long-stem roses during Valentine’s Day week and offer a romantic dinner for any patient ‘signing up’ (that means leaving a deposit!) for a future smile makeover (laminates, bridgework, metal-free crowns, etc).
4. ‘Barter’ with your local movie theatre, purchase (discounted) tickets for future attractions to use as prizes or giveaways while having them keep a display in their theatre (with your practice brochures available) on your practice (perfect after all that popcorn!)

Without prepping, esthetic changes are limited, you may have patients complaining of excessive bulk, there is not enough room to create deeper embrasures, there is limited potential for color change and they are usually more difficult to insert & bond.

Who fabricates your temporaries?

For our laboratory, your assistant who possibly fabricates your temps is very important(!) so give her the best materials & proper time to get this done beautifully.

• A temp left out of occlusion can result in a ‘high’ crown and lots of grinding!

• On the contrary, if the temps are left ‘high’ the final crowns will be out of occlusion! The Doctor must check the occlusion of the temporaries!

• Make sure the temps have adequate contacts so that the final crowns’ contacts are not tight! Since contact areas are very difficult to see in the mouth, look at the models you are making the temps are for rough, pointy or undercuts areas. If model is inadequate take a new impression.
